About the origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival
The Mid-Autumn Festival has two most known legends: Chang’e and Houyi of China and Cuoi – The Man in the Moon of Vietnam.
The Mid-Autumn Festival in China is known for being associated with the story of Chang’e and Houyi.
Before going to the moon, Chang’e was the wife of Houyi, who had excellent marksmanship and shot down nine suns to save everyone from being burned.
However, Houyi’s student Pong Meng, with an unrighteous heart, intended to steal the immortality medicine that Queen Mother gave Houyi from Chang’e while Houyi was away. In an emergency, Chang’e drank a precious pill turned into a fairy, and flew to the moon.
Houyi, to commemorate his wife, set up an altar under the moonlight. After hearing the news, everyone took turns placing incense burners under the moonlight, praying to the kind-hearted Chang’e for luck and peace.
In Vietnam, the origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival is associated with the legend of Cuoi – The Man on the Moon.
Cuoi is a smart, kind guy. Once in the forest to cut firewood, Cuoi discovered a large banyan tree that could cure all diseases and planted it next to his house to cure everyone. Cuoi’s wife was absent-minded. One day, Cuoi’s absent-minded wife mistakenly watered the banyan tree with urine, and the banyan tree flew out of the ground. Cuoi clung to the banyan tree to hold the tree but could not, so Cuoi and the banyan tree flew straight to the moon.
Since then, when mentioning the Full Moon of August, Vietnamese people remember the legend of Cuoi – The Man on the Moon.
